A 1-acre plot of Pigeon Hill Cemetery will belong to the Town of Sutton after it was approved at Spring Town Meeting on Monday, May 7.
During its May 2 meeting, the Board of Selectmen voted 5-0 on the purchase and sale of the cemetery, which is located off Mendon Road.
“The purpose is to add addition cemetery lots and a communications tower,” Town Administrator Jim Smith said. “It’s a high point in town and (the tower) would provide great coverage.”
Smith said he hired Andrews Engineering to lay out the area to be purchased.
The land is currently owned by George Kowszik. The agreed purchase price will be $22,000.
“It’s a great site,” Selectman Paul Maynard said. “I’ve walked it a lot of times lately. It’s a good location for the (communications) system.”
Until the purchase and sale are complete, the land has no value, Smith said.
“It’s beautiful. It’s good to think out of the box,” Board Chair John Hebert said. “If we can get land for $22,000, that’s a plus because we’re going to be looking for land some day.”
