Motor Vehicle Abatements

A partial abatement of the excise (and refund for an excise already paid) is appropriate in any of the following circumstances:

• When a motor vehicle is sold and the registration is cancelled, we need a copy of the Plate Return Receipt
• When a motor vehicle is traded in for another vehicle and the plate is transferred, we need a copy of the new Registration
• When a motor vehicle is totaled and the plate is cancelled or transferred to another vehicle, we need either the Plate Return Receipt or a copy of the new Registration
• Transfer of a person and his vehicle to another state or country with proof of registration in that state or country and cancellation of a registration in Massachusetts
• Overvaluation of a motor vehicle – (if you feel your motor vehicle’s value is to high please contact the Boston RMV contact number is 857 368-8181, ask for excise tax dept., if they change the value please make sure the documentation is sent to our office)
• Notification to the police within 48 hours of discovery of a theft of the vehicle, surrender of the certificate of registration not less than 30 days after the theft, and presentation of a certificate from the Registry of Motor Vehicles verifying that the car has been stolen and plate return receipt.

If you are disposing a motor vehicle it means you have traded it in, are selling it to a private party or totaling the vehicle
 

• If you trade it in, we must have the name of the dealer and their location.
• If you sell it to a private party, we must have their name and location.
• If it is totaled, we must have a letter from the insurance company declaring it was totaled.

No abatement will be granted until the proper documentation is submitted to this office.
