Staying Safe During Extreme Heat
During periods of extreme heat:
- Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
- Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Spend time in air-conditioned locations whenever possible.
- Never leave children, older adults, or pets in a parked vehicle.
- Check on elderly neighbors, relatives, and anyone who may be especially vulnerable to heat.
Know the Signs of Heat Illness
Seek immediate medical attention by calling 911 if someone experiences symptoms of heat stroke, including confusion, loss of consciousness, hot dry skin, or a body temperature above 103°F.
Symptoms of heat exhaustion—such as heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea, weakness, or muscle cramps—should be treated by moving to a cool location, drinking fluids, and seeking medical care if symptoms worsen or do not improve.
The Town encourages everyone to look out for one another during periods of extreme heat. A simple phone call or visit to an elderly neighbor or family member can make a significant difference.
For additional information on heat safety, residents are encouraged to review guidance from FEMA and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
